Day one and I ventured out mid afternoon so I could get down the beach!!
Very soft sand with the huge tides at present so, tricky going until half outgoing tide plus.

Called in to have a gander at the weighin and saw a binful of nice kahawai, about a dozen or so nice pannie Snapper (of 4 limits caught in one boat), a really nice Trev and a couple of lovely Carrots. There were other boats arriving as we headed down to the beach for a try.

I had Jake (son) paddle the kayak out towing a 10 hook rod based longline, with all baits Pillies in our new Bait Socks.

Expecting heaps, forever hopeful despite a brisk onshore wind and rough surf, I waited watching my 500m of 80lb braid getting thinner and thinner on the spool as Jake found his rhythm and slowly beacame a dot on the rough ocean.

Thankfully, he stopped before the line ran out, but I was beginning to consider plan B, swim after him!! I estimate I had less than 100m left on the very bare spool but recovered about 50m mending the wind belly in the line.

Once line set and straightened to the beach, we waited anxiously.

Several bites were detected and a few decent ones too.

A commercial longliner is working the Horowhenua beaches at present within 1km from shore, creating havoc with recreational anglers!

We soaked the baits for over an hour and seeing many hits, decided to retrieve it.

The line was still heavy and I figured either of two results, all baits intact, or a few Gurnard onboard.

The disapointment was soon after revealed as the traces all returned empty.

This was not expected at all. Pillies are the very best bait on this beach, what the hell is going on!!
Three baits were absolutely mashed up and one was all but gone from the ripped apart Bait Sock.

Several baits were totally untouched. The three hit were in positions 1, 2 and 3 closest to shore, but this setline is only 30m long and the hooks only 1m apart???

Tomorrow, we try again..... this time with some mixed baits but all still socked up.
At least the Bait Socks work a treat for keeping bait on the hook for longer, but still I need a real result!

We did however bring in a spare paddle arm of an apparent huge paddle crab so if you hear of one burrowing in circles, tell him I'm NOT sorry!!!

Further report tomorrow.............Note: I have never taken a fish from this beach while landbased and I fear my loooooong goose egg record may be even bloody longer by Sunday!!

You hang in there mate! Set closer to shore next time.
I'm off to the beach in a minute and will see if I can match a mate's catch from last night at 9:30pm. A very respectable 5.85kg pink.
Not bad for our beach!! Not quite hitting the 13lb but tells us that the nice fish are here.
I've remembered how to catch pinks, so I now have no need to die!

Roger that!
Last time we set just 150m approx offshore and felt every bite and knew what they were mostly, crabs.
We'll be out again later this avo when the tide abates a little again and try two sets closer in, a 10 hook and a 5 hook line hoping for about 200m. At least we can retrieve a bit if the yakker gets carried away again.
This is a cool method which has you fishing with 10 hooks from a Standup Game rod on 80lb braid.
No bending, just powered up!
Report later.....

Boats had to be launched off the Waitarere Beach ONLY between the 30kmh signs.
While there was the free use of the club tractor for launching, retrieving was the responsibility of the boatie and in the hands of the gods.

As we have a F/glass 5.5m Reflex, I considered it too risky being a heavy boat for beach launch and retrieve so opted for the environmentally friendly Kayak, towing a 10 hook setline out.
Unfortunately, by Saturday all that was in abundance in our part of the beach was bulk weed so we canned it from our perspective.
Sunday, we shot of too Te Horo and caught some baby school sharks (all returned).
Monday, our lads turned 19 and wanted to go fishing at Te Horo for a treat.
I was a bit peaved off with fishing by then but as it was their birthday choice, we headed off.

Our best result was a Red Cod of about 5lb which was immediately despatched, scales gutted and immersed in cold clean salt water......and pan fried in butter sprinkled with pepper....mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. (again several baby sharks returned to get bigger)
I can hear you all now, where are the Snapper..Kahawai etc.....buggered if I know to be fair, and you actually keep and eat those cod???
Yep, they are excellent when handled right as is any fish.
I have had some pretty atrocious Snapper over the years, destroyed at the hand of so-called home chefs (more like home butchers).

So there you go, that was our result. On a spearate post, some other results you all want to read.

Winning fish by Penny King, Snapper 7.54kgs
Several Snapper varying between 3 and 6kgs with the second place fish just 160gms behind the winner.
Lots of Trevally, a skate, heaps of Gurnard, Kahawai for Africa, English Mackerel, and of course Red Cod.
There was a fish auction of all the weighed in fish and that raised estimated about $4000 for the local surf club.
Entrants totalled about 184, weather fine all weekend apart from a menacing onshore westerly on Saturday avo to Sunday morning but flattened off again by 11am Sunday.
Sea was pretty clean apart from that bloody weed that annoyed several land based anglers in specific areas north of the surf club.
Torpedoes were successful despite a commercial longliner working the beach from Hokio to past Foxton.

Big Thanks to Sportsworld Levin who in conjunction with Kilwell Sports, were the main sponsors in the $7000 total offering.

In closing a great contest, very well organised and exceptional support from the locals.
A job well done!
